What to expect at Wadi Wurayah

Wadi Wurayah is the UAE's only designated mountain national park, a protected watershed in the Hajar Mountains of Fujairah with permanent waterfalls, clear mountain rock pools, endemic bird species and exceptional native wildlife. Entry is free and the park is one of the top natural experiences available anywhere in the Emirates, particularly rewarding in the cooler months when the waterfalls are at their most vigorous and the rock pools are at their most inviting.

The Waterfalls and Rock Pools

The park's main waterfall, one of the very few permanent waterfalls in the UAE, flows year-round from the mountain springs above, creating a series of clear pools in the carved limestone of the wadi bed. Swimming in these natural mountain pools, fed by perennial mountain water, is the most refreshing and most physically rewarding natural experience available in Fujairah. The pools are crystal-clear with visible bottoms and support a healthy freshwater ecosystem including endemic freshwater crabs and fish.

Wildlife

Besides, the park's designation reflects its real biodiversity importance, the park supports populations of Bonelli's Eagle, Arabian Tahr (a mountain goat-antelope found only in the Hajar Mountains and Oman), Egyptian Vulture and numerous endemic bird species. Moreover, the freshwater pools support the Wurayah Crab, an endemic species found only in this watershed. Serious birdwatchers visiting the UAE should prioritise the park above all other sites.

Hiking

The wadi offers hiking routes of varying difficulty: from the accessible 30-minute walk to the main pool section to more demanding full-day ascents to the higher watershed. The terrain is rocky and navigation requires care, but marked paths lead to the main swimming areas. A permit is required (free, obtained online through the Fujairah Environment Authority) and visitor numbers are managed to protect the ecosystem.
