What to expect at Ras Al Khor
The Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary offers one of the world's most improbable and most striking wildlife spectacles: a flock of over 3,000 greater flamingos standing in a shallow urban lagoon, their pink reflected in the still water, with the glass towers of Downtown Dubai rising on the horizon behind them. Entry is completely free, the purpose-built hides bring you within 30–50 metres of the birds, and the experience requires nothing more than arriving at the right time of day. It is one of Dubai's finest free experiences and one of its least known.

The Flamingos
The greater flamingo (Phoenicopterus roseus) is the world's largest flamingo species, standing up to 1.4 metres tall with a wingspan of 1.65 metres. Ras Al Khor is home to a resident and visiting population that varies between 1,500 and 3,500 birds depending on the season, with peak numbers typically occurring between November and February when winter migrants join the resident flock. These birds are not a managed collection or a captive exhibit. They are wild birds that have chosen this protected urban lagoon as their feeding and roosting ground.
The flamingos feed by wading in the shallow, mineral-rich waters of the Ras Al Khor lagoon, using their uniquely designed bills, which work upside-down, filtering water and mud for algae, small crustaceans and invertebrates, in the same feeding action their ancestors have used for millions of years. Watching this process at close range, hearing the soft murmuring of the flock and the occasional splash of a bird taking flight, provides a intimate encounter with wild nature that most zoo and wildlife park experiences cannot replicate.
The Hides
Ras Al Khor has three purpose-built viewing hides positioned at different points around the reserve, each offering a different perspective on the sanctuary's ecology. The main flamingo hide, accessible from the Ras Al Khor road, provides the closest views of the flamingo flock and is the best positioned for photography. The hide is equipped with camera slots at lens height, bench seating and free binoculars available during staffed opening hours. Generally, the sanctuary staff in the hides are knowledgeable and helpful to both casual visitors and serious wildlife photographers.
In general, the second hide overlooks a mangrove channel area where grey herons, western reef herons, little egrets and kingfishers are regularly active. The third hide, accessible from the Nad Al Hamar Road entrance, overlooks mudflat habitat that attracts waders during the spring and autumn migration periods. A visitor who uses all three hides in sequence receives a comprehensive view of the sanctuary's full ecological range rather than simply the flamingo lagoon.
Other Wildlife
Beyond the flamingos, Ras Al Khor has been recorded as hosting over 450 bird species across the year, one of the highest totals for any protected area in the UAE. Regular sightings from the hides include grey heron, Goliath heron, great white egret, little egret, black-crowned night heron, Eurasian spoonbill, Kentish plover, black-winged stilt, pied kingfisher and common sandpiper. During the spring and autumn migration periods, the diversity increases considerably as species moving between Africa and Eurasia pause to feed and rest in the sanctuary.
The sanctuary's mangrove channels are also habitat for the Indo-Pacific dugong, a rare and shy marine mammal that occasionally enters the sheltered waters of Ras Al Khor from the adjacent Gulf. Dugong sightings are uncommon and never guaranteed, but their presence in the heart of urban Dubai speaks eloquently to the sanctuary's ecological importance and the quality of the habitat protection it has received.
Conservation Significance
Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary was established as a protected area in 1985 and has been designated as a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance, one of the world's most significant conservation designations for wetland ecosystems. The sanctuary covers 6.2 square kilometres and protects one of the most significant remaining areas of natural creek habitat in the Dubai coastal environment. The decision to protect this land from development, at a time when its commercial value would have been enormous, reflects a forward-thinking conservation commitment that has preserved one of the Gulf region's most valuable wildlife habitats.

Tips for visiting Ras Al Khor
These tips make a visit to the Ras Al Khor Sanctuary easier, especially if it is your first time.
Arrive at 7:30 AM
The early morning light is best for flamingo photography and the birds are most active in the first 2 hours after sunrise. Arrive right at opening.
Telephoto Lens
A 200–400mm telephoto lens dramatically improves the photography. The birds at 30–50 metres are close but a zoom lens fills the frame beautifully.
Drive to the Hide
The main flamingo hide is accessible by car, drive to within 50 metres of the hide structure rather than parking at the main road entrance.
Use the Free Binoculars
Free binoculars are available during staffed opening hours and transform the experience for visitors without their own optical equipment.
Best Months
November and December have the largest flamingo numbers as winter migrants arrive. Generally, the most spectacular flock sizes are in this period.
Maintain Silence
Keep noise low in and around the hides. The flamingos are tolerant of quiet human presence but will flush if startled. Silence is rewarded with closer approaches.
