What to expect at Burj Khalifa
The Burj Khalifa stands at 828 metres as the world's tallest building, a feat of engineering and ambition that defines the Dubai skyline and offers, from its observation decks on the 124th, 125th and 148th floors, some of the most striking views available anywhere on earth. The building required 110,000 tonnes of concrete, 55,000 tonnes of steel rebar, 22 million man-hours of labour, and six years of construction before its opening in January 2010. Visiting its observation deck is one of the most popular and often celebrated experiences in the UAE, drawing over three million visitors annually.

The Journey to the Top
The Burj Khalifa experience begins in The Dubai Mall, through a dedicated entrance on the Ground Floor near the Aquarium. After passing through security, visitors enter the "Dubai Then & Now" immersive gallery, a multimedia exhibition that traces Dubai's transformation from 1975 to the present day through photographs, film and interactive displays. This context-setting exhibition is excellent and transforms the subsequent view into something more than tourism. You are looking down at the product of an striking collective human achievement condensed into less than fifty years.
The high-speed double-decker lifts travel at 10 metres per second, 36 km/h, and reach the 124th floor in about 60 seconds. Also, the lift car walls display an accelerating animation of the building's exterior as it rises, adding to the sensation of speed and height. Most visitors feel a slight ear-pressure change, similar to aircraft ascent. The lift doors open directly onto the indoor observation lounge, and the view is immediate and overwhelming.
At the Top — Levels 124 and 125
Besides, the standard "At the Top" experience includes access to the 124th floor indoor observation lounge and the 125th floor outdoor terrace. Besides, the indoor lounge features floor-to-ceiling glass panels with a 360-degree panorama, interactive telescopes with information overlays on visible landmarks, and a small café area. In addition, the outdoor terrace, enclosed with safety glass to the full height of the parapet, allows direct exposure to the open air at 452 metres and provides unobstructed photographic opportunities in all directions.
In general, the view encompasses the entirety of Dubai: from the historic creek district and Deira in the north, through the forest of towers along Sheikh Zayed Road, across the Palm Jumeirah and the Marina skyline, to the expanding suburbs and desert beyond. On clear days in winter, the Hajar Mountains of Oman are visible 150 kilometres to the east, and Abu Dhabi's skyline can sometimes be made out 140 kilometres to the southwest. The Arabian Gulf is visible on three sides. In fact, the Dubai Fountain, visible in the lake directly below, performs its shows every 30 minutes from 6 PM onwards, watching from 452 metres above is an striking perspective.
At the Top SKY — Level 148
In general, the premium "At the Top SKY" experience adds access to the 148th floor, at 555 metres, among the highest publicly accessible outdoor observation points in the world. Generally, the SKY experience includes a dedicated butler service, complimentary welcome drink, access to a more intimate and less crowded environment, and an outdoor terrace with an infinity-edge design that creates the sensation of standing at the very edge of the sky. On overcast days, the 148th floor can be above the cloud layer, an experience difficult to describe and impossible to forget.
The SKY ticket is priced far higher (AED 379 versus AED 149) but the combination of exclusivity, the additional height, the butler service and the striking outdoor terrace experience makes it worth serious consideration, particularly for special occasions or first-time visitors seeking the definitive Burj Khalifa experience.
Photography Tips
The Burj Khalifa provides exceptional photography opportunities but timing and planning noticeably affect the quality of results. Early morning (9–11 AM) offers the cleanest atmosphere, softest light, and smallest crowds, the ideal combination for landscape photography. Sunset (about 5:30–6:30 PM in winter, 7–7:30 PM in summer) provides the most dramatic sky colours and the beautiful transition from golden hour to city lights. Night visits (after 8 PM) offer the spectacular illuminated city panorama but require camera settings capable of low-light photography.
For smartphone photographers, the observation deck staff are helpful with positioning for the best shots. The outdoor terrace's relatively low parapet height allows photography unobstructed by glass, though the glass panels on the inner portions of the terrace are very clean and do not noticeably impair photography through them. A polarising filter noticeably improves aerial photography in hazy conditions.
Practical Information
Booking online in advance is a good idea, online tickets typically cost 20–30% less than walk-up prices and allow selection of preferred time slots. Popular times (sunset, weekends, public holidays) book out several days in advance. The Dubai Mall complex around the Burj Khalifa is one of the world's largest, and the observation deck entrance on the Ground Floor can be difficult to locate on first visit, follow the "Burj Khalifa At the Top" signs from the main mall entrances.
