Kazbegi & Gergeti Trinity Church: Complete Travel Guide 2026

📍 Greater Caucasus, 150km from TbilisiGergeti Trinity Church 2,170m · Mount Kazbek 5,047m

Kazbegi — renamed Stepantsminda but still universally called Kazbegi — is Georgia's most dramatic mountain destination: a small town in the Greater Caucasus range at 1,750m altitude where the 14th-century Gergeti Trinity Church stands on a 2,170-metre ridge above the Terek River gorge, the 5,047-metre cone of Mount Kazbek visible directly behind it against the sky. The image of the medieval church below the glacial peak has become the defining photograph of Georgia and one of the most reproduced mountain images in the world — a composition of such inherent drama that even mediocre photographs of it appear extraordinary. The 150km Military Highway from Tbilisi crosses the Greater Caucasus range to reach Kazbegi through the Dariali Gorge, one of the great historic routes between Europe and Asia.

The Gergeti Trinity Church (Tsminda Sameba, 'Holy Trinity') was built in the 14th century as a repository for the Georgian royal crown and the cross of St. Nino during Tamerlane's invasions — the 600-metre ridge above the village was chosen precisely for its inaccessibility, making the church one of the most dramatically sited medieval buildings in the Caucasus. The interior is simple — dark stone walls, ancient icons, candles — but the position and the surrounding landscape are extraordinary. The church is reached on foot from Kazbegi town by a steep 2–3 hour hike through subalpine meadows (the path gains approximately 600m altitude), or by 4WD vehicle on a rough track (approximately GEL 80–120 per vehicle, negotiated with the drivers who gather at the town square). The hike is strongly recommended — the path through the meadows above the tree line, with the Caucasus peaks appearing progressively and the church growing from a silhouette to an architectural presence, is one of the finest short mountain walks in Georgia.

The view from the church is the finest in the Caucasus accessible without mountaineering equipment — Mount Kazbek's glaciated cone dominates the southern horizon, its upper slopes feeding the Gergeti Glacier that descends into the valley below the church. The Terek River gorge drops away to the north toward Russia (the Georgian-Russian border is approximately 13km from Kazbegi), and the Dariali Gorge is visible as a deep cut in the mountain wall to the northwest. In spring and early summer, the meadows below the church are carpeted with wildflowers — gentians, alpine roses, rhododendrons and dozens of other species in a display of considerable beauty. In winter, when snow covers the meadows and the church, the silhouette against the winter sky acquires an austere grandeur that many photographers consider more powerful than the summer version.

The Military Highway (Georgian Military Road, the historic route connecting Tbilisi to Vladikavkaz in Russia via the Dariali Gorge and Jvari Pass at 2,395m) provides the journey to Kazbegi through some of the most dramatic road scenery in the Caucasus — the Ananuri fortress on the Zhinvali reservoir (1.5 hours from Tbilisi), the Gudauri ski resort crossing and the views of the Greater Caucasus peaks appearing above the treeline as the road climbs toward the Jvari Pass. Marshrutkas (shared minibuses) from Tbilisi's Didube terminal to Kazbegi run regularly (approximately GEL 10–15 per person, 3 hours) — a comfortable and affordable way to reach the village without a car.

The Rooms Hotel Kazbegi (on the hillside with direct Kazbek views) is one of the finest boutique hotels in the Caucasus — the restaurant terrace with the church and mountain as backdrop is the finest dining view in Georgia. Several other guesthouses and guesthouse-style hotels in the village offer accommodation from GEL 50–100 per night and the village's bakeries and local restaurants serve traditional Georgian mountain food — lamb dishes, khinkali (the large Georgian meat dumplings that are Kazbegi's signature food), bean stews and churchkhela (walnut strands dipped in grape syrup). An overnight stay — essential for witnessing the mountain in the early morning light and the sunset colours on the glacier — gives a completely different experience from the day trip. The best version of Kazbegi is the mountain at dawn, when the first light touches the glacier and the town below is still in shadow.

The best season for Kazbegi is May–October — the church hike is accessible from approximately late April (snow permitting) to November. In winter (December–March) the Jvari Pass is frequently closed by snow and the church access road is impassable — the church silhouette against the winter sky and the snow-covered meadows are extraordinarily beautiful but access requires a 4WD vehicle and significant snowfall experience from the driver. The village has accommodation year-round and the skiing at Gudauri (45 minutes back toward Tbilisi on the Military Highway) makes a winter trip combining Gudauri and Kazbegi feasible if the pass is open.

🌄

Arrive in Kazbegi the Night Before

The Rooms Hotel Kazbegi terrace at dawn — Mount Kazbek turning pink in the first light with Gergeti Trinity Church below — is one of the finest mountain sunrise views in the Caucasus. Stay overnight to see it.

🥾

Hike Up — Don't Take the 4x4

The 1.5-hour hike to Gergeti Trinity Church through mountain meadows is far superior to the 4x4 ride — you see the changing angles of the church against Kazbek as you ascend, wildflowers in season and the valley opening below.

🌤️

Start the Hike at 7 AM for Clear Skies

Afternoon cloud typically builds over the Kazbek massif by noon. Start hiking at 7 AM — the mountain is clear, the church is in morning light and you descend before the clouds move in.

🍖

Eat Khinkali in Kazbegi Village

The mountain khinkali dumplings in Kazbegi are the finest in Georgia — larger, more peppery and filled with abundant broth. Order 10 per person at any village restaurant for GEL 8–12. Hold by the knot, bite the base, drink the broth first.

🏔️

Truso Valley for the Second Day

The Truso Valley (1 hour east of Kazbegi) passes a Byzantine-era fortress and a mineral spring area creating colorful iron-oxide deposits. The most dramatic gorge near Kazbegi after the Terek valley itself.

❄️

September for First Snow on Kazbek

Mid-September brings fresh snow to the Kazbek summit while the valley remains warm. The contrast of fresh white peak above and green valley below, with Gergeti Trinity Church between them, is the finest version of the iconic view.
